In the celebration of the Eucharist, Catholics listen to the Word of God (in the reading of the Scriptures) and receive the divine life of Jesus Christ (in Holy Communion).

Taking part fully in the Eucharist (or ‘Mass’ as it is better known) is the third and final step of being initiated into the Church.

Eucharist is the Greek word for giving thanks. When we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we give thanks for all that God has done and continues to do for us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. In the Eucharist the crucified and risen Jesus – the complete divine Son of God – reaches down to us and lifts us up to join him in offering ourselves to God the Father. It is a complete offering of ‘self’ into God’s hands, an encounter with the Divine that is the summit and source of our lives as Christians.

Here at Holy Name, Mass is celebrated principally on Sunday (the Day of the Lord) and also during the week as well (see the Mass schedule on the Home page).

First Holy Communion

Parents are the first and most important educators of children in the Catholic faith.

To assist parents to fulfil their responsibilities, our parish arranges educational classes for children – aged 7 years or older – for their First Holy Communion. The course begins in January each year normally on a Sunday afternoon for seven weeks (not half term) before Easter.

The children will make their First Confession in Lent (sometime in the six weeks before Easter Sunday) and their First Holy Communion from Easter onwards. Parents can request a date for their child to make their First Holy Communion during weekend Mass anytime after Easter Sunday.

First Holy Communion 2026 – Our next First Holy Communion preparation course begins on Sunday 18 January 2026 from 2pm to 3pm in our Church Hall on Towers Avenue. The programme consists of seven sessions, concluding before Easter and avoiding half term. There is no charge. Children should be seven years old or older and must attend all the sessions with at least one parent or guardian.  The catechists use the Archdiocese of Liverpool “With You Always” programme resources which are both welcoming and active for parents and children as they work alongside each other.  If you wish your child to join the preparation programme, please email the parish office at welcome@holynamejesmond.co.uk
